I'm a Scary Teacher
Apparently that's what some students think.
I gave my second-year alpha students an ultimatum today.
Tests are next week, and after explaining how I was going to grade them (five interview questions, plus an essay on their impressions of watching the Super Bowl), I informed them that the last part of their grade would be based on their class participation, and how often they turned in their homework.
I don't know about other high schools, but it seems that Starfish High's students don't get a lot of homework. Any time you try and give them some, they don't bring it to class. I've been giving my alpha students writing assignments for homework. They don't do them. So I told them...
We grade on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 scale, not a letter scale.
My alpha students got some really serious looks on their faces and said, "Dustin Sensei, you're scary."
Mwa ha ha ha ha.

If you don't turn in every homework assignment I've given you BY THURSDAY, I will drop you one number grade.
